Reciprocity, Superposition, Maximum Power Transfer; Star-Delta Transformation;
Electrostatics:- capacitors, applications of capacitors, energy stored in electrostatic field;
Magnetic circuits, Faraday’s Laws of Electromagnetic Induction, Lenz’s Law, Statically & Dynamically
Induced EMF, Self & Mutual Inductance, Coefficient of coupling, Energy Stored in magnetic field;
Module II
Alternating quantities; sinusoidal ,square, triangular waveforms- average and effective values, Form &
Peak factor, Significance of sinusoidal waveform, concept of phasors, Phasor representation, Phase
difference, addition & subtraction of sinusoidally varying quantities; Cartesian, Polar and Exponential form
of representation of phasors.
Module III
Analysis of AC circuits: series-parallel circuits with R, L, C components; Concept of Impedance,
Admittance, Conductance, Susceptence, Resonance; Instantaneous Power, Average Power, Active &
Reactive power, Power factor-causes and problems of low power factor , power factor improvement;
Polyphase system: Three phase system, Phase sequence, concept of balanced and unbalanced three phase
system, power in three phase system.
Module IV
Familiarisation of various types of service mains, wiring installations; Study of fuse, selection and rating;
Methods of earthing, Measurement of earth resistance;
Measuring instruments: basics of voltmeter, ammeter, multimeter, wattmeter and energy meter, electronic
and digital meters
Battery characteristics: Lead acid and Alkaline cells, tubular & SMF types, Ampere hour & Watt hour
Efficiency; Fuel cells;
Energy conversion devices-basics of generators, transformers and motors- types, schemes of operation and
applications.
